Visiting Uganda in February – Dry Season Adventures

February is another fantastic month to visit Uganda, with the dry season still in full swing. It’s an ideal time for wildlife safaris, gorilla trekking, and birdwatching, offering excellent visibility, warm temperatures, and lush landscapes. Whether you’re exploring vast savannahs, dense forests, or serene lakes, February delivers some of the most rewarding experiences in the Pearl of Africa.

Weather in February

Expect warm and pleasant temperatures ranging from 17°C (63°F) to 29°C (84°F). Rainfall is still minimal, making it one of the most reliable months for travel. Roads are in good condition, hiking trails are dry, and the air is clear—perfect for photography and outdoor adventures.

Wildlife Viewing

February is excellent for game drives in Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, Lake Mburo, and Kidepo Valley National Parks. With water becoming scarcer, animals continue to concentrate around rivers, lakes, and watering holes, making sightings more predictable. You can expect to see elephants, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, antelopes, and possibly elusive leopards.

Boat safaris on the Kazinga Channel or the Victoria Nile are a highlight, offering close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, and a wide array of birds.

Gorilla & Chimpanzee Trekking

February remains a prime month for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The trails are dry and easier to hike, and the gorillas are often found in accessible areas.

Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest, Kyambura Gorge, or Budongo Forest is also rewarding in February, with increased chances of locating large troops in the canopy or foraging on the forest floor.

Birdwatching

February continues to attract both resident and migratory birds, making it one of the best birding months in Uganda. Whether you’re in wetlands, forests, or savannahs, you’ll be treated to colorful and rare species, including the Great Blue Turaco, African Fish Eagle, and possibly the Shoebill Stork.

Other Experiences

Nature walks and hikes in Sipi Falls, Lake Bunyonyi, and the Rwenzori Mountains offer breathtaking views under clear skies.

Cultural tours to local villages, including the Batwa community and traditional homesteads in eastern and northern Uganda.

Photography safaris are particularly fruitful thanks to golden light and minimal haze.
