January to March: Serengeti and Wildebeest Calving Season Predators

Predators abound in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains these months. Seeing cheetah anywhere in Africa is most likely best done at this time of year! For the herds, February is calving season; about 500,000 wildebeest are born here this month.

April and May: Wildebeest herds head toward central Serengeti.

Given all the newborn wildebeest, this is a period of unusually high herd size. As the herds wander northward preparing for the major push towards Lobo and the far north, central, southern Serengeti is the spot to be seen.

June: Wildebeest herds across the Grumeti River

June usually finds the herd separated into two sizable groups. While the biggest “mega” herd moves round to the western corridor, some begin to go straight north. As the herds head north, this is a big migration month. It is also the time of year the herds pass across Grumeti River.

July through early August: Wildebeest Crossing the Crocodile Infested Mara River

Since the herds are in the middle of their main drive north, this is a big migration month. Starting across the crocodile-infested Mara River, the first wildebeest herds present an amazing opportunity to be in this far-off section of the park.

Mid-August to October: Daily Herd Crossings of the Mara River

November and December: Unknown Wildebeest Herd Movement

Predicting the movement of the herds as they advance south is somewhat challenging at this point. Some travel across the middle of the park, others east to Loliondo.
