Comprising Zanzibar Island itself and adjacent Pemba Island, Zanzibar is a separate state within Tanzania situated less than twenty minutes’ flight from mainland Tanzania.

History

Explore its past and the island comes to life exposing extensive trade over the past 2,000 years between Arabia, Persia, and India. Although the island has an intriguing blend of cultures and a rich history, Zanzibar’s beaches really draw attention. Every year, the 95 percent Muslim Zanzibari community observes Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting. Please be advised that, throughout the 30-day period, most but not all of the Stone Town pubs and restaurants will be closed until sundown.

Activities on the island center on the beach; from every lodge, sunset cruises, snorkelling, and diving tours abound. If you can pull yourself away from the beach, swim with dolphins at Kizimkazi, see the enormous sea turtles of Nungwi, and even visit the colobus monkeys of Jozani Forest!
