Mafia Island Holidays

Located south of Zanzibar, Mafia Island is a peaceful island where days are spent diving and fishing along exposed sand bars. Here, particularly during whale shark season, Scuba is rather excellent.

From Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam, Mafia is thirty minutes’ flight away. It is a very fantastic place to see whale sharks and boasts the biggest marine park in Africa. Actually, we believe that the diving here is the best in Tanzania; it is even better than off Pemba.

Though there are more hotels here than in Pemba, they are more rustic-chic than opulent in line with the island vibe. For adventurous visitors who appreciate the outdoor life, we believe this to be a great place. Advanced divers will especially benefit from it. Kinasi, the first big resort on the island, is worth looking at for a facility and activity intensive lodge. If you would rather have a quirky and characterful base, though, consider the lovely raised bungalows at Pole Pole or the amazing treehouses at Chole Mjini.
