Where to go in Africa in October

The earliest indications of the conclusion of the renowned dry season occur in October.

Our October Suggestion

Though the first rains begin to affect some areas later in the month, most of the nations we operate in will still provide excellent game watching. Usually, this rain has no impact on safari quality; in certain places, it is only a welcome respite from the high temperatures defining the end of the dry season. As these nations approach the summer months, temperatures in the Seychelles, Mozambique, and Mauritius are still rising.

Tanzanian

The heat is far less severe than in southern Africa’s key parks—specifically those in Botswana, Zambia and Namibia—and Tanzania’s principal parks are still in their prime seasons. October’s dry-season parks, especially Ruaha and Katavi, where the absence of tourists and great amount of game makes it a wonderful and genuine safari location, are great favorites of ours. Tarangire’s elephant herds are largest in the north of the country; the Serengeti has more river crossings as the herds begin their southern migration.

The Republic of South Africa

Traveling to South Africa in October is fascinating since the Cape is entering its peak season with lovely days and clear skies. At this time of year, the Kruger is also really remarkable as the rains have not yet begun.

Botswana

Botswana is excellent at this time of year if you can withstand the heat. The heat pushes the wildlife toward the watering holes, increasing herds and simplifying life for the predators as they congregate around the lakes and rivers. While the Okavango Delta provides the herds a constant supply of water, Chobe and the Linyanti see great herds of elephant. While the Boteti River region south of Maun sees significant game on its banks, Chitabe Reserve in the southern Delta and the herds in the Linyanti are spectacular views.

Zambian

Like with Botswana, Zambia is a great place to visit all through October if you can tolerate the heat. While the numbers of elephant in the Zambezi Valley are equally remarkable, great herds of buffalo and elephant travel the Luangwa Valley. The overall game densities across all the parks are really high, therefore great for viewing.

The Republic of Kenya

October in Kenya is also toward the conclusion of its dry season and provides great game viewing as well as good value with several camps lowering prices as visitor numbers begin to fall.

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is beginning to get quite hot now, so guaranteeing that animals is all gathered around the permanent water sources and provides great game viewing.

Mauritius—

The last month of the dry winter in Mauritius is October, which is also the ideal time to go before the nation becomes hot and humid in its summer season.

Seychelles,

As it is a transition month between the trade winds, October is a particularly excellent time to visit the Seychelles. The chilly southeast trade winds end; the warmer northwest trade winds arrive.

Namibia’s

One of the warmest months of the year, October is the peak of the dry season in Namibia. Water is very limited and animals are driven to gather around the last few permanent waterholes, making this one of the greatest times for game viewing. In the desert, daytime temperatures can be 29°C (84°F) and frequently higher.

Mozambique

October, toward the end of the dry season, is a great time to visit Mozambique if you like temperatures in the upper 30s to 34°C. Diving conditions are perfect given the calmness and clarity of the sea.

Rwanda,

Rwanda in October is very much the crossing month between the dry season and the short rains, which makes gorilla-trekking conditions a bit uncertain. Most days are still warm and bright, which suggests that gorilla excursions are still very advised.
