Where to go in Africa in May
Though May is certainly a wonderful time to see Namibia, we are major fans of Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe during this season.
Our May Advice
May finds East Africa at the height of its intense rains. Days are uncertain at this time of year for Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania as they get their most rainfall. May marks the conclusion of the green season in southern Africa. As the jungle thins down and animals are drawn back to the permanent sources of water, visitors begin to show interest in the parks in this area. Beach locations such Mauritius, the Seychelles, and Mozambique all have dry days with pleasant temperatures.
South African nation
The trees are still losing leaves from the advent of fall in South Africa last month, so more wildlife in the larger game reserves like the Kruger is visible. While Cape Town, the Garden Route, and other regions have varied weather, mornings and nights in May are cooler.
Botswana’s
May is a great month for us since the Okavango is in full flow and the country turns maybe the most stunning spot in Africa at any time of year. One of the most stunning sites in Africa is the Okavango at full flood. Known by those in the know as the “secret season,” May offers a great benefit for travel to Botswana since Africa’s most costly safari destination is still in its low season for rates!
Zambia’s
Most of its camps re-open in the lovely Lower Zambezi National Park, which opens in May, as well-known Luangwa bush camps. This is indeed the beginning of Zambia’s season and a nice calm time to visit the nation.
Zambian
From May to October, Zimbabwe really shines; May is a great month to avoid the summer throngs. May is a wonderful month to mix with some time at Victoria Falls since it is also at its highest flow following the rainy season.
Namibian
May is also a great time to visit Namibia since the country is still lush, rain is rather uncommon, and the temperature is almost ideal since winter has not yet begun. Like with Botswana, the nation is in its low season, which offers good value.
Mauritius.
Winter in Mauritius lasts from May to September, although this offers quite nice temperatures, so it is perfect to visit during this time. You may experience some rain, but often it’s in the shape of light showers.
Seychelles.
Particularly if you are a passionate diver, May is a wonderful time to see the Seychelles. Water temps can reach 29 degrees Celsius and visibility is usually 30+ metres.
Mozambique
The rain has mostly stopped in Mozambique by April/May and temperatures hover around 28°C as the humidity decreases. This marks the beginning of the dry season and a wonderful time to visit Mozambique! Perfect diving conditions are created by the quiet, clear water.
