Where to go in Africa in December
Simply spectacular are Kenya’s Maasai Mara, Laikipia, and Lewa; Tanzania’s Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
Our suggestions for December
Game watching in southern Africa becomes more challenging as the wet season approaches since waterholes around the nation open up and the herds scatter into smaller group. Most of Zambia and Zimbabwe is closed at this time of year; South Africa still offers sufficient concentrations of game to provide a top-quality safari.
Tanzanian
The movement of game in the lesser known reserves is significantly impacted by Tanzania’s mild rainfall; Katavi, Ruaha, and Nyerere (previously Selous) all experience a notable change in game numbers as herds scatter over these large parks. The outcome is far more challenging large game-viewing. But at this season, Tanzania’s Northern Circuit is excellent since the Great Migration of the Serengeti is in full flow.
Southern Africa
With the Cape and along the Garden Route at their best, December is among South Africa’s greatest months. While Safari is not as wonderful as a couple of months ago, the private reserves of the Kruger still provide great big game watching; Timbavati is one of our preferred places for a South African safari at this time of year.
Kenya
Usually by mid-December, Kenya’s short rains are finished and the dry season is starting. The landscape is significantly green after the rains, and while this may make game viewing more challenging than the dry season, don’t let it discourage you. Though you have to reserve these important dates far in advance to obtain the greatest camps, Kenya in December is a fantastic month for safari in Kenya and performs quite well for Christmas or New Year vacations.
Mauritius,
With yearly temps peaking in either December or January, December is an excellent time to travel Mauritius. December’s benefit is that humidity levels are not yet as high as January, making it excellent beach weather for sun lovers. Usually in the nights, you may see some erratic tropical rains and storms as this is the summer rainy season, but you are nearly guaranteed 6 – 8 sunny hours every day.
Seychelles
One of the warmest months of the year, December is rather popular for visiting the Seychelles. The islands can be somewhat rainy in December, with mild breezes and caution should be exercised to avoid the southern islands under the cyclone zone.
