When to Visit Kenya: December

December in Kenya is a month of contrasts and celebration. The short rains taper off, the bush blushes green, and the country begins to stir with the excitement of the festive season. It’s a time when landscapes are lush, wildlife is active, and a sense of renewal settles across the plains. From the drama of the wild to the rhythm of the coast, Kenya in December feels vibrant, fresh, and full of promise.

Weather in December: Lush Skies, New Life

December straddles two seasons. The early part of the month often sees the tail end of the short rains — brief showers that tend to arrive in the late afternoon or at night, painting the skies with brooding clouds and feeding the newly awakened earth. As the month progresses, the rain subsides, and the days turn sunnier and warmer.

Temperatures are pleasant, typically between 24–30°C (75–86°F), and the air carries the scent of fresh growth. The landscape is no longer dry and golden — instead, it’s rich with new grasses, budding trees, and wildflowers, especially in the central highlands and the Mara.

This is a month of color and contrast: bright skies above, green plains below, and occasional moody storms sweeping across the horizon.

Wildlife: A Season of Birth and Renewal

December brings with it the first signs of new life. This is the beginning of the calving season for many herbivores — particularly antelope, impala, and wildebeest — and with new life comes heightened predator activity. Lions, cheetahs, and leopards are on the move, alert to the vulnerability of newborns.

While the Great Migration herds are back in Tanzania, Kenya’s resident wildlife remains superb. The lush greenery may make sightings a touch more challenging than in the dry season, but the reward is rich behavior and intimate moments: elephants with young calves, giraffes stepping through wildflowers, and hyenas trailing newborn gazelles in the early light.

Birdwatching is outstanding, with migrant species from Europe and Asia arriving in full force. The air is filled with song, color, and motion, making December a dream for photographers and nature lovers.

A Festive Energy Without the Rush — Until the Holidays

For most of December, Kenya remains fairly quiet, especially in the bush. Camps and lodges have availability, and the safari experience feels immersive and unrushed. But as Christmas approaches, demand begins to rise sharply. From around mid-December through the New Year, domestic and international travelers arrive in greater numbers — especially at coastal resorts and popular national parks.

It’s a time of celebration, and many lodges host festive dinners, special sundowners, and cultural performances to mark the season. If you’re traveling over the holidays, advance bookings are essential — the best spots fill quickly.

The Coast in December: Beachside Bliss

December is one of the best times to be on the Kenyan coast. The ocean is calm, the skies are bright, and the humidity is manageable compared to the peak of the long rains. Diani, Watamu, Lamu, and Malindi all come alive with vibrant energy and a cosmopolitan mix of travelers.

Water visibility improves, making this an excellent time for snorkeling and diving. Sunset sails, seafood feasts, and dhow cruises are daily rituals, and the atmosphere is festive, yet still relaxed — especially in the first half of the month.

Should You Visit in December?

Absolutely — December is a beautiful, atmospheric, and lively time to explore Kenya. It may not offer the dry, dusty drama of July or August, but it more than makes up for it with freshness, life, and a sense of seasonal magic.

Come in early December for green plains, baby animals, and peaceful parks. Come later for sun-drenched beaches, festive cheer, and a celebration of Kenyan hospitality. Either way, December is a month that closes the year with beauty, warmth, and wonder.
