Mwagusi Safari Camp
The magnificent ‘Grande Dame’ of Ruaha! Mwagusi is truly one of a kind; you won’t find many properties like it elsewhere. The camp was established years ago and exudes a distinct charm; it truly feels like home at Mwagusi. I wholeheartedly endorse it.
SUMMARY:
Mwagusi Safari Camp is under the ownership and management of Chris Fox, a renowned guide in East Africa. In 1987, Chris established the camp to offer genuine, straightforward safari experiences for those seeking adventure. More than thirty years on, the camp continues to flourish – it stands as one of the oldest properties in Tanzania, harmoniously blending with the surrounding natural environment! Your stay has been arranged with full meals included, along with filtered water, a variety of activities, and laundry service for your convenience.
ACCESSIBILITY & POSITION:
The camp is located approximately 45 minutes away by road from the closest airstrip. Many visitors arrive in Ruaha by flying from Dar es Salaam, which takes about 2½ hours. Mwagusi boasts a fantastic setting along the banks of the seasonal Mwagusi river. This area is truly exceptional for observing wildlife in the national park!
LODGING & AMENITIES AT MWAGUSI SAFARI CAMP:
The guest lodging features 13 tented rooms, referred to as bandas. Built from local timber, stone, and thatch, these blend effortlessly with the surrounding bushland. The thatch roof gracefully extends beyond the internal canvas tent, offering a generous veranda space. The veranda is equipped with lounge and dining furniture, including a hammock, set on a red stone floor surrounded by boulders. It’s an ideal place to unwind and take in the stunning views of the river! Within the tent, you will discover a double bed or twin beds, bedside tables with lighting, a writing desk or dressing table accompanied by a chair, and an explorer’s chest for your storage needs. The floors feature vibrant rugs, and the bedspreads are complemented by joyfully patterned cushions. Spacious gauze windows invite ample light when desired, and while there isn’t a fan, the design of the tent facilitates a refreshing airflow. The en-suite facilities can be found at the rear of the tent, accessible through a separate area designated for storing clothing and personal items. The facilities include a flush toilet, washbasin, and walk-in shower, set within walls that blend stone and reed, adorned with natural items gathered from Ruaha, like driftwood and bones. The tents exude a genuine atmosphere – it’s clear why many travelers come back here!
The communal areas at Mwagusi are beautifully constructed using timber, stone, and thatch. The roof is elevated to a remarkable height in several areas, providing stunning views over Ruaha! Within, the floors showcase the same lively red stone found in the guest bandas, polished to a delightful shine. The lounge area showcases a circular arrangement of seating made from stone, adorned with lighter-red cushions. At the center, a boulder serves as a coffee table, complemented by an assortment of mammal skulls for added character. The camp features a well-equipped bar just a few steps above the lounge, seamlessly connected to the dining area. In this space, several tables surrounded by campaign chairs are arranged, inviting guests to enjoy delightful communal meals together. Visitors have the option to indulge in bush dining, with breakfasts available for packing as a delightful picnic. Lunches are delightful buffet-style gatherings, and afternoon teas consistently feature delicious cake! Your day concludes with an exquisite three-course dinner at Mwagusi, frequently enjoyed beneath the starry sky. The camp features a library equipped with cozy sofas and a selection of wildlife books, perfect for enjoying some peaceful moments.
