Isoitok Camp Manyara

A charming and adventurous place that truly emphasizes community engagement and ensures its guests feel like they belong to the ‘family’. An excellent choice for those seeking value.

SUMMARY:

This camp is truly delightful, ideally situated for those looking to discover the wonders of Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire!

ACCESSIBILITY & LOCATION:

The location is a concession nestled within the savanna bush of Esilalei, bestowed by the Maasai community. The camp is managed by Chris Pilley and Ingrid Vaes, both of whom possess extensive experience in the tourism sector and maintain a strong rapport with the local Maasai community.

LODGING & AMENITIES AT ISOITOK CAMP:

Chris took the initiative to design the camp and collaborated closely with a committed team to bring it to life. The term ‘Isoitok’ comes from the Maasai language and means ‘many stones’ – a fitting description given the plentiful stones present here, from the stacks beside the wooden entrance gate to the lines that border the pathways leading to the buildings scattered across the grounds! Additional piles are situated around the edges of the dining tent, which serves as a place for meals – featuring a long table and straight-backed chairs for shared dining, along with side tables for tea, coffee, and alcoholic drinks. The mess tent features an open front, providing stunning vistas of the savanna leading to the Great Rift Valley and, down below, Lake Manyara!

The lodging options at Isoitok include six tents: four deluxe and two rustic units. The walkways through the grounds link these to the mess tent. Chris enjoys crafting with wood as well – every tent features a uniquely charming wooden door. Each tent is equipped with either a double bed or twin beds, and the deluxe option offers ample space to accommodate a third bed for those needing a triple room. The space just beyond the entrance offers a charming veranda, featuring a petite table accompanied by two director’s chairs. The floors are adorned with handwoven mkeka mats, complemented by solar lighting. Each choice features a luggage rack and a wardrobe for your convenience. The rustic tents feature throwdown cushions for seating, while the deluxe units come equipped with a lounge chair, along with a writing desk and chair. Each type of tent is equipped with private facilities, including a flush toilet and a shower system referred to as ‘hangman’ (with hot water available upon request). The standard accommodations feature a simple washbasin setup, while the premium options boast a tailor-made version. The tents do not have power sockets; however, you can recharge your equipment in the mess tent.

EXPERIENCES AT ISOITOK CAMP:

Isoitok offers a wide range of engaging experiences!
You can discover the concession through an exciting game drive or a refreshing nature walk, and Lake Manyara National Park is conveniently located just 12km away. This park might be the tiniest in Tanzania, yet it showcases a remarkable variety of wildlife and bird attractions, including the impressive gatherings of flamingos.
The stunning Ngorongoro Crater is conveniently reachable from the camp, boasting abundant prides of lions and leopards, along with a variety of other species!
Tarangire is definitely a place to explore, featuring the impressive elephant migration and abundant herbivores.
Birdwatching is exceptional in all three parks, so be sure to bring your binoculars!
Engage in cultural experiences right from the camp, including a Maasai medicine walk, a visit to a Maasai boma, traditional Maasai song and dance, and a traditional goat sacrifice. These are ideal for those who are curious about the Maasai way of life!
No matter how visitors decide to enjoy their stay at Isoitok, they are cared for by a warm and inviting team.
The guiding standards are exceptionally high, with most walks accompanied by the camp host and a highly knowledgeable Maasai scout. Please note that this property is unfenced and situated in a wildlife area, meaning that large and potentially dangerous animals may pass through. If you choose to stay here, please remain vigilant while moving around the camp and feel free to ask a staff member to accompany you if you have any worries. Every guest is accompanied after dark as a standard practice.
