Greystoke Mahale Lodge

What further has to be said on Greystoke? Among the better and most well-known camps in Africa is this one. Greystoke is far more than just a chimpanzee destination, in my opinion; leaving the chimps aside this camp is far more wild and exciting than some people would have you believe.

Overview

Nomads Tanzania owns and runs Greystoke Mahale. Sister camp to Nomad’s Chada Katavi; we consider a trip including both camps to be among the best safaris we provide, absolutely very adventurous and maybe life-changing too! Greystoke has been given a Certificate of Excellence by TripAdvisor and routinely gets excellent ratings. The lodging is reserved on a full-board basis, including all meals, a variety of soft drinks and alcohol, and laundry. Please be advised the camp closes for repairs from mid-March to early June.

Access & Location:

Travelers arrive to the camp at least 60 kilometers from any road by 90-minute dhow voyage on Lake Tanganyika after a 3 ½ hour flight from Arusha. Mondays and Thursday are flight days. Greystoke has a stunning length of white sands by the lake, and the Mahale Mountains’ forested backdrop is quite magnificent!

At GREYSTOKE MAHALE LODGE, accommodation and facilities:

Six guest bandas, all two-story buildings with well-separated nests into the forest encircling the lake beach, Made from ancient dhole wood and palm tree thatch, every banda blends wonderfully with the surroundings. A few steps bring one inside the bedroom. This also relates to the deck area since the bandas are open fronted. Here you will find a pair of wooden benches, a writing desk and chair, a double bed or twin beds with mosquito nets, bedside tables and lamps, and two sunloungers. For privacy, a pair of thick curtains at the front of the banda can be closed and fastened. Behind the bed or beds, in the dressing room, is storage furniture. Besides a lockable chest, there is hanging room for clothing. Further back yet, there is the bathroom with shower, sink, flush toilet. On the banda’s top floor, additional seating is accessed by steep stairs cut out of an ancient canoe! For a child, this area in one banda can serve as their bedroom.

The famous lodge on the site, a wood-and- thatch banda on the beach, houses Greystoke’s lounge and eating areas. Like the guest bandas, the lodge has two stories. It’s completely open sided, to acknowledge cool winds. The lounge has cozy chairs around coffee tables and a reading library. Long tables in the dining room run alongside campaign-style seats. Usually, this is the scene for the mouthwatering buffet breakfasts and light lunches held at the camp; everyone eats together and talks about their experiences of Mahale and environs! Serving three-course dinners in the dining room and pre-dinner beverages at the magnificent “Sunset Bar” Rocks at the end of the beach show this, and they would be ideal for sundowners at the end of every day! On the top level of the lodge is a reading room. Here too are several board games and amazing views of the lake.

Activities at Greystoke Mahale Lodge:

At Greystoke, chimp treks take front stage! Usually starting in the mornings, visitors are always accompanied by an expert park scout and guide.
Trekking in the Mahale Mountains’ woodlands is an amazing experience with many of sightings of animals to delight. Not least among the amazing nine kinds of primate life here is the red colobus monkey.
Along with hundreds of vivid butterflies and an amazing array of birds, from crowned eagle and harrier hawk to crested guinea fowl and jaunty red-capped robin chats, there are bushbuck and bushpig as well.
Trek times run from twenty minutes to three hours, occasionally longer!
The chimps dominate the lower mountain slopes in August and September, even making camps. Wherever you find them, they are intriguing to watch.
Additionally available at the camp are lake-based pursuits include kayaking, dhow excursions, or just beach relaxation.
Dhow trips offer great chances to view the hippo and crocodile life of the lake.

Also worth trying is some catch-and-release fishing. Large and maybe deadly animals do travel through this unfenced property since it is in a wildlife region. If you decide to stay here, please be careful when strolling around the camp and ask for a staff member to accompany you should you have any questions. Of course, any guest is escorted after nightfall.
