Background of the Grumeti Game Reserve
In 1994 Grumeti became a game reserve. The Tanzanian government assigned this designation to the region in order to safeguard its great variety of species and to maintain its migration path. 2002 is another important occasion since the not-for-profit Grumeti Community and Wildlife Conservation Fund bought the right to oversee the land. Four years ahead fast, and Grumeti’s management rights were passed to luxury safari business Singita. Actually, Singita owns and runs the magnificent Sasakwa Lodge, the reserve’s main property. Found here also is another favourite, Singita Faru Faru!
Grumeti Game Reserve’s big five plus other species
One should give Grumeti some thought as a safari spot. May and June bring the amazing Great Migration of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles through. Thanks in great part to the native crocodiles, the Grumeti river surely witnesses its fair share of fatal encounters as these massive herds draw all the great cats – lion, leopard, and cheetah! Every property in the reserve boasts a competent team of guides, so ensuring excellent sightings of all the species.
We truly grade Grumeti even outside the Great Migration months. Every Big Five is living here right now. Regarding predators, you can search for cheetah, hyenas, jackal, wild dog, serval, and caracal. Wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, eland, kudus, bushbuck, waterbuck, and a fine range of antelopes generally comprise the herbivorous count.
Grumeti boasts also really remarkable birdlife. From raptors to waterbirds, singers to owls, there is never a shortage of feathery companions here! Bring your binocs and look for a bird for every letter of the alphabet—avocets, bee-eaters, canaries, doves. And never overlook your camera either!
