Mahale Mountains National Park

The most distant National Park in Tanzania is the Mahale Mountains. Nestled on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, these mountains ascend into the skies and provide a somewhat unique habitat for trekking with chimpanzees.

Mahale National Park is a wonderfully secluded location situated far West of Tanzania. One of the most remote areas we do safaris from. Most people know Mahale Mountains National Park for its chimpanzee trekking, which is thought to be the best on Earth. There are between 800 to 1,000 wild chimpanzees living in the park dispersed across about 12 different communities, including the well-known “M” group. But Mahale’s attractions transcend chimpanzees quite a little. The park’s jungle-dressed summits fall to a stunning beach on the shore of the second-deepest lake in the world, Lake Tanganyika, which is sparkling clean.

Along with boating, canoeing, fishing, swimming, and just lounging, activities include treking for the chimps. Mahale is especially well-known for Greystoke, the first-rate camp that makes the effort and expenses of traveling here so worthy. That camp is among the most well-known ones in Africa. Many professionals rank the chimpanzee experience at Mahale as the best animal encounter available in Africa.

Mahale’s major camps are three or four night stays; all you really need to know is This is absolutely set in stone. If at all feasible, we advise four nights here since Mahale will most likely be the most incredible destination you have ever seen — pushing the boat out means money well spent. The second reason is that we advise Western Tanzania for all visitors, even if it is sometimes said to be exclusively a safari destination for enthusiasts. For first-time safari visitors as much as for experienced safari hands, Mahale is a destination. People’s perceptions are based on Katavi, the adjacent National Park the safari enthusiasts consider to be the mecca, which causes uncertainty. Here, we are trying to emphasize that Mahale is a really amazing area suitable for everyone.

Activities in Mount Mahale

Trekking for the chimps; boating and canoeing; fishing; swimming; just leisurely relaxation.
Time of year for travel to the Mahale Mountains
Mahale operates in the same manner as the dry-season parks; chimpanzee viewing at its peak spans July through October. Trekking is simpler later in the year when you travel since chimps are closer to the mountain base. Though one that may take some significant trekking to see the chimps as they migrate to higher ground, Mahale is closed during the rains of April and May but a good destination for the rest of the year.

Best travel advice

We have already discussed how you should attempt and stay for four nights instead of three; nevertheless, if you are spending this much time and money getting out to Mahale, you have to give Katavi some thought, especially if safari is really important to you! This is a real vacation of a lifetime, among the best week-long safaris we run anywhere.
