You cannot leave Africa. It is always with you, there inside your head.

Kampala Holidays

The largest city in Uganda, Kampala is also its capital. As one of the fastest-growing cities in the world, it is also East Africa’s greatest city to live.

Mostly, we sell stop-over stays here to visitors staying only one night in Kampala before or after their safari in the national parks of Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, Kibale, and Lake Mburo. The city has consistent transportation connections to and from Entebbe’s airport, which offers overseas flights. On the other hand, should you choose to spend more time discovering Kampala, we would be glad to organise this for you.

Kampala’s past

Kampala’s name comes from the British moniker ‘Hills of the Impala’. The land was a royal hunting reserve when British colonists arrived here in the late eighteenth century. Captain Frederick Lugard, on a quest to create a trade route between Mombasa and Lake Victoria, established a post for the British East Africa Company in 1890. He would only be military administrator for Uganda for two years.

Lugard constructed a fort along one of the hills during his stay in the area, so allowing the colonists to take control of Kampala and most of the Buganda kingdom apart. In nineteen oh five the territory was proclaimed British colony. Though Entebbe was designated Uganda’s capital in the same year, Kampala remained the country’s hub for communications and trade until it reclaimed the title in 1962. Among the city’s achievements was the establishment of the Makerere Technical Institute, in 1922.

Independence came in 1962 as well. Political turmoil followed for years and finally harmed many of Kampala’s structures. The city has made a remarkable comeback, though; today it boasts a lot of hotels, shopping centres, sports stadiums, and other attractions all supported by a good infrastructure. There is much for tourists to see and do.

Things to do in Kampala

Kampala’s hills are fascinating as they are crowned by mosques and churches as well as some magnificent hotels. Going down into the city’s lower areas will bring you to the Uganda Museum, the Uganda National Theatre, and the Nakasero and Saint Balikuddembe markets. Serving both local and foreign food, the great variety of cafés, pubs, and restaurants is outstanding. Trips to several shopping locations, especially the mall in Garden City, will appeal to keen consumers. That mall is also home to Casino Simba, which boasts one hundred gaming machines, well-known in Kampala.
