Queen Elizabeth National Park Safaris
Among all Uganda, Queen Elizabeth National Park is the most frequented. Located in the western part of the nation, it covers four districts.
Queen Elizabeth N.P. gets more tourists than any other park in Uganda for good cause. Covering 1,978 square kilometers, this vast region comprises the Kazinga Channel connecting the two major lakes of George and Edward, the Maramagambo forest, the game reserves of Kigezi and Kyambura, and the Kazinga Channel. There are craters and volcanic cones as well. And this range of topographical elements obviously produces a nice mix of fauna. About 400 kilometers from Uganda’s capital city, Kampala, it is reached by flight or car transfer from Entebbe International Airport.
Fauna
Queen Elizabeth N.P. has five different kinds of plant total: savanna grassland, forest grassland, acacia woodland, swampland, and lakeland. Here live around a hundred species of mammal and more than six hundred species of bird. Among the mammals counted are lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, hyena, chimpanzee, black-and-white colobus monkey, hippo, crocodile, waterbuck, topi, warthog, and giant forest hog. Often spotted resting in large fig trees, the tree-climbing lions in the park’s Ishasha area are a prominent attraction. And eager birders can keep an eye out for Chapin’s flycatcher, black-rumped buttonquail, papyrus canary, African skimmer, shoebill stork, great flamingo, pink-backed pelican, and martial eagle.
Past
Originally named as Kazinga National Park, the park was founded in 1952. Its name was changed barely two years later after a visit from Queen Elizabeth II, the present monarch of the United Kingdom. It has been paired with Queen Elizabeth Country Park of the South Downs of England since 2009. Including schools, the Queen Elizabeth Parks Project emphasizes conservation and encourages local communities’ love of animals. It helps the park rangers in the UK and Uganda to carry on their mission.
