When to Visit Uganda

The Best Time for Safaris, Gorilla Trekking, and Adventure

Uganda is a year-round travel destination, but the best time to visit depends on your activities and preferences. Whether you’re looking for prime wildlife viewing, gorilla trekking, birdwatching, or a peaceful off-season escape, each month offers something unique.

Best Time for Safaris and Wildlife Viewing (June to October, December to February)

The dry seasons from June to October and December to February offer the best wildlife viewing in Uganda. With less rain, animals gather around waterholes and rivers, making them easier to spot in Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Kidepo Valley, and Lake Mburo National Parks. Game drives are more rewarding, and boat safaris on the Nile and Kazinga Channel are unforgettable.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking (June to September, December to February)

Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but the best conditions are during the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) when trails are easier to navigate in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. These months offer clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and better photography opportunities.

Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking (Year-Round, Best in Dry Seasons)

Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest, Budongo Forest, and Kyambura Gorge is great all year, but dry months (June–September and December–February) make for easier trekking. However, the wet seasons (March–May, October–November) bring more fruit, making chimpanzees easier to find.

Best Time for Birdwatching (November to April, Year-Round for Residents)

Uganda is a top birdwatching destination all year, but the best months for migratory species are November to April. The Mabamba Swamp, Semuliki, and Queen Elizabeth National Park are hotspots for over 1,000 bird species, including the elusive Shoebill Stork.

Visiting Uganda by Season

Dry Season (June–September, December–February) – Best for Wildlife & Trekking
Sunny, dry conditions – excellent for game drives and trekking.

Wildlife is easier to spot as animals gather at water sources.

Peak tourism season – higher prices, but well-organized safaris.

Wet Season (March–May, October–November) – Green and Less Crowded
Lush, vibrant landscapes, perfect for photography.

Fewer tourists – more exclusive experiences and lower costs.

Some park roads can be muddy, but game viewing is still rewarding.

Great for birdwatching, as migratory species arrive.

So, When Should You Visit Uganda?

For the best safaris and trekking: June–September or December–February.

For fewer crowds and lower costs: March–May or October–November.

For birdwatching: November–April (best for migratory birds).

For gorilla and chimpanzee trekking: Year-round, but dry seasons are easier.

Uganda is stunning in every season, offering unique experiences no matter when you visit. Whether you want to witness thrilling wildlife encounters, trek through misty jungles, or enjoy peaceful off-season travel, Uganda delivers an unforgettable adventure any time of the year.
