Where to go in Africa in March
Most of ‘Safari Africa’ is headed toward the conclusion of its severe rains by March. The end of March marks the first indications that the rains are finishing, and this is a wonderful time of year to travel for value.
Our March Suggestion
Though it is still a wonderful place this month, Tanzania is just starting its primary rainy season. The Great migratory is in full swing and the newborn wildebeest have raised migratory numbers to the highest levels. South Africa is at the end of its summer. The nation has less tourists and so can be very smart place this month.
Tanzanian
Game viewing in Tanzania’s Serengeti is still rather nice at this time of year, March, despite the impending severe rains. The migration is in full flow and the newborn wildebeest have increased the Great Migration to its biggest hordes.
In March, Tanzania’s Northern Circuit is a great area; in fact, the Serengeti is incredibly good all through January, February, and March, with the park being the best spot in Africa to see cheetah at this time of year. The vast wide plains’ incredible predator concentration is amazing. We also utilize a few camps down in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area—practically an extension of the Serengeti—which provide not only some of the best cultural contacts but also walking activities on the continent. Many of the camps have reduced their fees to ‘low’ season, making a tour in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro an excellent one for March and one that can be quite good value.
The Republic of South Africa
At the start of March, the Cape in South Africa is a great destination. Driving excursions up and down the renowned Garden Route are excellent choice while the weather is still favorable. Travelling at this time of year has its drawbacks, though: combining the great Cape with high-quality safari is difficult because Botswana is in its rainy season and most of Zambia is still closed because of rain and floods. Still excellent, though, is South Africa’s own safari, particularly the Kruger and Sabi Sands; this is the region we would combine with Cape Town for a little add-on safari.
