Where to go for an African safari holiday in February

Most of ‘Safari Africa’ is in its severe rains by February. There are days throughout this season when relentless rain and significant storms can dominate.

Our suggested February safari vacations

Most of Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia is best avoided at this time of year for tourists whose main goal is large game viewing safaris. But neither Tanzania nor Kenya get the torrential rains; both are great for game viewing. All the cats are at their most active hunting among the big herds during the calving season of the Great Migration. February is ideal for gorilla trekking as Rwanda, like Kenya and Tanzania, is in its dry season.

Holidays in Tanzania

Tanzania’s Northern Circuit is a great vacation spot in February; in fact, the Serengeti is incredibly fantastic all through January, February, and March since February is calving month for the Great Migration. At this time of year, safari lovers rush to the Serengeti just for the possibility of combining their vacation with the two to three weeks when the migration is calving in full.

Roughly 500,000 wildebeest are born in less than a month at this time of year! The Serengeti also turns into the greatest spot in Africa to see cheetah at this season; the incredible density of predators on the vast open plains is breathtaking. We also utilize a few sites down in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (essentially an extension of the Serengeti), which provide in addition some of the best cultural exchanges and walking operations on the continent. For February, a safari vacation planned around the Serengeti and Ngorongoro is excellent.

Holidays in South Africa

Especially down at Cape Town and along the renowned Garden Route, South Africa is a fantastic vacation spot in February. Though a safari in both the Kruger National Park and Sabi Sands is still excellent, the north and south of the nation have rather different climates.

Holidays in Kenya

February finds Kenya in its hot dry season, which is great for both large game safari and bird viewing in the Maasai Mara and Laikipia. Many water sources drying up causes animals to gather around watering holes, which makes game watching far easier than the rainy months. All the cats are really busy currently during the calving season attempting to take advantage of this chance for simple prey.

Rwanda vacations

Warm and usually bright weather in February makes it a popular time to visit Rwanda since it creates excellent gorilla-trekking conditions. Our suggestions are Wilderness Sabyinyo and Wilderness Bisate. Though the variable weather patterns around Volcanoes National Park make it difficult to forecast, this month does show a slow rise in rain as it approaches March.
