Where to go for an African safari holiday in January

Most of ‘Safari Africa’ enters its wet ‘Green Season’ in January. Knowing that waterholes will be everywhere, animals travel with the beginning of the rains, spreading over vast distances in search of fresh grass.

Our suggested January safari vacations

The greatest locations are hence Tanzania and Kenya, which are still in their dry seasons and excellent at this time of year for travelers whose main goal is large game viewing. Should you wish to see gorillas in Rwanda, this nation will be in its dry season as well, much like the rest of East Africa. Many tourists in January also turn to South Africa since the Cape and Garden Route are at their peak and the safari is still quite excellent even if it is the wet season there.

Tanzania vacations

Especially the Northern Circuit makes Tanzania a wonderful place in January; the Serengeti is simply fantastic all during January, February, and March. The first Great Migration herds have arrived at the Ndutu plains just south of the Serengeti proper and are beginning to prepare for the calving weeks in February.

The Serengeti becomes the best site in Africa to see cheetah during this time of year, and the incredible numbers of predators on open plains is breathtaking. Down here we utilize a few camps that also provide some of the best cultural exchanges and walking activities we are aware of in Africa. A great safari for January is created by planning a vacation in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.

Holidays in South Africa

At this time of year, South Africa is really stunning. The weather is ideal and driving vacations up and down the renowned Garden Route are seldom better. Travelling at this time of year has its drawbacks, though: combining the great Cape Town and Winelands with high-quality wilderness safari is difficult as Botswana is starting its rainy season and the great bulk of Zambia is closed because of rain and floods. Still excellent, however, is South Africa’s own safari, particularly in Kruger National Park and Sabi Sands; there may be rain. This is the region we would pair with Cape Town for a brief add-on holiday safari.

Holidays in Kenya

Visiting Kenya in January is wonderful. Game viewing in places like the Maasai Mara is at its best with bright hot days and minimal rain; the month also marks the beginning of the calving season. All of this indicates that January is a well-liked safari vacation time for the nation. Certain locations can become quite crowded, thus it’s crucial to plan your trip to avoid any overpopulation.

Rwanda vacations

Many people visit Rwanda in January because of warm, bright weather and mostly dry days. Offered by the well-located Wilderness Sabyinyo and Wilderness Bisate, this weather creates great gorilla-trekking conditions. January is not entirely rain free, either, because the erratic weather patterns near Volcanoes National Park imply that a downpour could occur at any time.
